This is the 5th pair of gloves I've tried. 4. 5 stars more accurate, all things considered. I'm keeping them. Good waterproofing - critical. Still need merino liners at UK damp 2 -3 degrees and below to keep middle fingers pain free. Bearing in mind i'm fine in fingerless down to about 7 C. I'm expat Cumbrian - not nesh. They were my last resort tbh after dhB 'Extreme Winter' ( simply not waterproof as claimed- sent back) Gore insulated (nicely made, waterproof, but no ulnar padding so too expensive for just that - sent back), Madison ( same as Gore but crap looking design as well - sent back), Cheap Sports Direct pair - worse than not waterproof and interfering with ride as well ! - taken back) These Alturas are about as warm on the fingers at low, damp temp commuting home at 1, 2am in UK Mids Winter as all the above. ie not good enough on their own. And the same as my old Alturas which are just disintegrating 10 yrs on. I'm not sure why it's soooo difficult to get insulation round fingers without resorting to lobster gloves, but all claims of extreme winter blah blah of the above gloves prove to be no better than these which don't claim that. I got these cos the Nevis reviews slammed their waterproofing. Basic. How hard is it to get some merino wool blend in the fingers instead of the crazy over-claimed synthetic fleece layers . . . . and some decent gel on the outer hand base and under the thumb? II'm not paying £120 + to try the crazy end of the market, I'd rather wear ski gloves -- or just add the merino liners. Someday, someone at one of these companies will realise that wool is a better insulator than modern synthetic fleece layers. Or they'll finally put sufficient of the inferior fleece round the fingers to keep them as wam as the hand backs - my 'hands' were never cold in any of the dry ones at any temp, just index & middle fingers. Less circulation there means more -- breathable - insulation from the onrushing cold air. The fit is snug, I got large, previous alturas were M. Not hanging off, but can get a liner in. The double cuffs are a gimmick. You'll get water leaking in them if you don't put both glove cuffs under your waterproof jacket sleeve. But hey, they work, they look decent, they're comfortable when its a bit warmer as well. Night vis. Ticks the critical boxes for a 365 ( bar actual ice or real threat later) commuter.
