As a converted roadie, a hardtail mountain bike is my ideal partner when riding off-road. The geometry on an XC hardtail like the Orbea Onna is the closest to a road bike. I felt comfortable on it straight away. With front Suspension and wider tyres it’s a great way to have fun on muddy trails.

Hardtail Mountain Bikes – Pure Fun

Hardtails are the simplest type of mountain bike. This makes them ideal for riding in muddy conditions as there are fewer moving parts to get clogged up. Hardtails are great for developing your skills too. Even more so in slippery conditions. Sliding around in the mud is so much fun and it will help you to develop your bike handling skills, so you’ll be riding with more confidence come the summer.
Essential Kit For Muddy Mountain Biking
Front Mudguard
Getting muddy is inevitable on wet rides, but you need to see where you're going. A Front mudguard like the RRP ProGuard gives you uninterrupted vision, and it'll keep you relatively clean, at least from the waist up.

Waterproof Jacket
A waterproof but breathable jacket like the Endura Singletrack is a go-to for riding in the winter months. Not only to keep the mud and spray at bay, but also to stay comfortable on long days trail riding.

Waterproof Socks
When wet and cold it can dampen your spirits, but if your feet are warm and dry you'll be happy in the saddle. With waterproof socks, you don’t get cold feet, so you can to stay out on the trails all day long.
